HANNA director Joe Wright has signed on to take the helm of the "Hitchcockian thriller" THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, based on the novel by A.J. Finn. Judging by the book's plot description, it's quite appropriate to describe this project as being "Hitchcockian", because it's another take on the concept of Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW (pictured above).
Finn's novel tells the story of
Anna Fox, who lives alone — a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times… and spying on her neighbors.
Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble — and its shocking secrets are laid bare.
What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one — and nothing — is what it seems.
The REAR WINDOW idea of someone witnessing a neighbor commit a crime is a perfect set-up for a thriller, and it would be great if Wright's film turns out to be as "diabolically gripping" as the source material apparently is.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts (AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY) is handling the screenplay adaptation. The project is backed by Fox 2000, with Scott Rudin and Eli Bush producing.
