Lars von Trier’s take on the end of the world is just about ready to go. The notoriously difficult director has lined up an impressive cast for the film, MELANCHOLIA, including Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgaard and Udo Kier. Now he’s brought one more actor into the fold: John Hurt. The 70-year-old actor is still rolling; he’s also soon to be seen in the last two HARRY POTTER flicks, as well as Tarsem’s IMMORTALS (aka WAR OF THE GODS).
MELANCHOLIA, about the last days on earth in the shadow of a gigantic planet, starts shooting July 19 in Trollhattan, Sweden. (Is Trollhattan some kind of fantasy-land version of NYC?)
Zentropa Denmark is producing MELANCHOLIA together with Slot Machine in France, Zentropa International in Cologne, Sweden’s Memfis Film and Trollhattan Film. It will most likely be ready for next year’s Cannes Film Festival, as von Trier is a fixture at the fest.
