Director John Poliquin's short film SELFIE was set to premiere at the SXSW festival in March, but the festival was cancelled due to the pandemic. That had to be disappointing for Poliquin, but things have worked out with SELFIE in the long run, as Netflix has now asked the director to take the concept of the 9 minute version of SELFIE and turn it into a feature film.
Poliquin will also be writing the feature with short co-writer Colin Minihan. Poliquin and Minihan previously wrote the 2019 horror film SPIRAL, which is available to watch on the Shudder streaming service.
The SELFIE short had the following synopsis:
An insecure teenager deletes her social media accounts and learns that what she put online will come back to haunt her.
It's said that the feature expansion will
explore the horrors of body image in the age of social media.
Minihan will be producing the film with Benjamin Anderson. Minihan and Anderson are also working together on a remake of URBAN LEGEND, which Anderson is producing and Minihan is writing and directing.
The synopsis doesn't give much to work with, but it sounds like SELFIE has the potential to be interesting. We'll keep you updated on the project as it moves forward.
