Johnny Depp is a suave idiot in the hilarious trailer for Mortdecai

As set images have floated around the last few months from David Koepp‘s film MORTDECAI, I have been anticipating the trailer to see if this would be another generic Johnny Depp film or something actually worth my time. With a cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza, Paul Bettany, Jeff Goldblum, and Olivia Munn, I was expecting good things. Now that the trailer has been revealed, I have to say I have a big smile on my face.

Based on a set of comic graphic novels from the 1970s, MORTDECAI seems like the exact movie Depp should always make: quirky, surreal, and funny. David Koepp, reuniting with Depp from SECRET WINDOW, has always been a stronger writer than a director, but this looks like a whole lot of fun.

Juggling some angry Russians, the British MI5, his impossibly leggy wife, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

I will admit that when the trailer starts, you may groan at the sight of Depp brushing his ridiculously over the top mustache, but I have a feeling you will be sold by the end. This is going to be a dark movie, not one for the kids who like Captain Jack Sparrow, but it should make for an entertaining adult comedy with dark undertones. Plus, Olivia Munn‘s boobs.

MORTDECAI is slated to hit theaters February 6, 2015.
