It’s been nearly a decade since the last installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but a new sequel is finally taking shape. Of course, the biggest question is whether Johnny Depp will be returning as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
Johnny Depp on Pirates 6
After so many years involved in a legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp seems to be making a comeback. And while speaking with Entertainment Tonight on the press tour for Ebenezer, the actor commented on returning for the new Pirates sequel. He didn’t exactly confirm anything, only to say he would never turn down a request from Jerry Bruckheimer.
“If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the ‘Pirates’ franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,” Depp said. “I will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.“
However, some reports have also stated that Sparrow will be more of a supporting character this time around, with Margot Robbie taking on the leading role. Sparrow may be the big draw in the Pirates movies, but he has typically worked better as a supporting character rather than the lead.
The Old Gang Wants to Return
In addition to Depp, it’s possible we could see more members of the Pirates franchise return.
Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Barbossa, recently said he’d be down to come back for the new movie, provided it serves a purpose. “I go to Shakespeare and go to Hamlet’s father comes back as a ghost,” he said. “It’ll take good writing, but just to come back and annoy Jack Sparrow for one more go, you know? I’d even say get the fans to write in what they’d like to see happen.“
Orlando Bloom, who plays Will Turner in the franchise, said he still keeps in touch with the Pirates cast and asks about another sequel “all the time.“
“I do connect with [Depp] every now and again, because he’s amazing,” Bloom said. “But I think, it’s like, that was so fun and it was such a zeitgeist-y thing. I mean, I don’t know how they do it or when they do it, but I haven’t heard.“
