Johnny Depp is all over San Diego Comic-Con to promote Ti West’s upcoming Ebenezer movie. After first making a surprise appearance outside to talk with fans, Depp interrupted Collider’s Directors on Directing panel in character as Ebenezer Scrooge to present the first trailer for the film. All About Ebenezer
Directed by Ti West, the film is described as a dark reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic novel. It also serves as Depp’s first major Hollywood role since his lengthy and publicized legal battle against Amber Heard. The trailer heavily pushes Depp, even noting his other classic misfit roles, such as Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter.
As Scrooge, he even says, “It’s good to be back” in the trailer.
The film features quite a cast. In addition to starring Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge, we’ve got Sir Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit, Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, and Sam Claflin as Fred (Ebenezer’s nephew), as well as Charlie Murphy, Ellie Bamber, and Arthur Conti.
Ebenezer will hit theaters on November 13.
So Many Adaptations!
The story of A Christmas Carol has been adapted a lot, with one of the earliest surviving film adaptations dating all the way back to 1901. Some of the interpretations of the classic story include The Muppet Christmas Carol, Scrooged starring Bill Murray, and a motion-capture movie from Robert Zemeckis featuring Jim Carrey as Scrooge and the three ghosts. My personal favourite is Scrooge, the 1951 adaptation featuring Alastair Sim in the title role.
There’s also another version in the works, as Robert Eggers is said to be developing his own take on the story. Even more intriguing? He’s eyeing Willem Dafoe to play Ebenezer Scrooge —now that’s some inspired casting. However, before Eggers sets his sights on spooky festive cheer, his next project will be Werwulf, which hits theaters on December 25.
