Jon Chu might direct Disney’s adaptation of the young adult novel Matched

Matched

Something about the term “young adult novels” rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it’s because so many ACTUAL ADULTS read these books. Sure comics are suppose to be for “kids” too, but clearly stuff like DMZ, Irredeemable, or Nemesis are geared more towards adults. Another reason is that most of the young adult novels released now just simply shrivel like a cold sack in the Arctic tundra in comparison to classics in the past. The Outsiders, The Catcher in The Rye, and The Giver are just three that have more substance in their book jackets than Twilight has in its entire series. Yes I am exaggerating, but only slightly.

THR is reporting that G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and STEP UP 3D director Jon Chu is in talks to direct MATCHED for Disney. The book series of the same name is by Ally Condie and is “set in a future society where people are told what to read, what to watch, what to believe and who to love, the story centers on a young woman who rejects an arranged romance and chooses her own path.” The adapted screenplay comes from Michele and Kieran Mulroney (SHERLOCK: A GAME OF SHADOWS.)

I have not read the books so I have no idea how fully realized this “futuristic society” is in the novels. The only thing hotter than YA adaptations is a YA adaption that’s set in a dystopian future so I’m sure news will be coming out fast and furious if Jon Chu does sign on.
