I'm still a little amazed that a series of films based upon a theme park ride have managed to be so entertaining, but as the fifth installment of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise is quickly approaching I guess I'd better get used to that. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL introduced us to Captain Jack Sparrow and launched three sequels of varying quality. The most recent film, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, may have made the most money but it also received the worst reviews as people finally began to grow tired of Johnny Depp's Sparrow-schtick.
Kaya Scodelario (THE MAZE RUNNER), who will be appearing in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, spoke with Digital Spy and seemed to indicate that the producers are aware of the complaints that have been leveled at the franchise and are working to get the series back on track:
It [does have] a lot more of the first movie, that's what they wanted to bring it back to, [the producers] want to take it back to the beginning again. They wanted it to have this epic journey, and for it to make sense, and for it to tie things up, and also lead to new storylines.
Scodelario will be playing Carina Smyth, a scientist and an academic fighting for the right to study at university. That fight sets her on a journey which leads to an encounter with Captain Jack Sparrow.
So she's on her own journey – looking for the trident of Poseidon – and she has a diary with clues, and she encounters Jack Sparrow along the way, and he messes everything up. As he does. And it's fun!
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, which wrapped up production in July, will be bringing Orlando Bloom back to the franchise (but not Keira Knightley) and see Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) face off against the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is set for a July 7, 2017 release.
