Well, it looks like it’s finally happening: Kevin Smith is ready to make RED STATE. I’m not even going to link to all the articles we’ve written where Smith has talked about it, talked about wanting to do it, talked about funding it with the money donated by his fans – there’s just a million of them. However, Smith seems pretty certain this time. He updated his Twitter page a few hours ago with the following:
I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all. Happy to report RED STATE is not the latter.
First draft was dated 9/5/07. Looks like we start shooting this July. Took nearly three years, but we’re finally gonna roll on RED.
In a few tweets where he responds to people’s questions, Smith claims that RED STATE won’t be “torture porn”, but “tonally closer to RACE WITH THE DEVIL or DELIVERANCE”. He also mentions that it will be completely indie. (No surprise since we’ve read time and time again that no studio wants to touch it.)
Still not much is known about the plot, although Smith has said it concerns religious extremism and has a character based on the right wing nut case Fred Phelps. So that, combined with his RACE WITH THE DEVIL comparison, and I think you can get a pretty good idea what this film is going to resemble…
