Kinji Fukasaku’s Battle Royale to be converted into 3D

I just don’t get this.

Japanese studio Toei is preparing a 3D version of Kinji Fukasaku’s modern classic BATTLE ROYALE into 3D. Fukasaku’s son, Kenta Fukasaku (who directed the sequel), is supervising the conversion. It will be released in Japan on November 20.

The controversial 2000 film, one of the biggest Japanese money-makers ever, despite the fact that it was almost banned there, is about a class trip that is hijacked by a merciless government and made to play a deadly “game” on an isolated island wherein they’re made to kill each other. It’s a bloody, dark, satirical masterwork – truly fearless filmmaking.

And yet, I have no interest, and see absolutely no point in, this conversion. The film simply wasn’t made with 3D in mind. It would be like releasing it in black & white. The fact that Fukasaku’s son is behind it might make it slightly more bearable from an ethical standpoint, but not by much.

Would you see it?
