If you dug IN TIME, chance are you might want to WITHER…

Variety is reporting Prospect Park and Violet House Productions have just acquired screen rights to Lauren DeStefano’s dystopic sci-fi fantasy WITHER, the first in a trilogy of novels. My guess is a potential franchise is being plotted, but all that will depend on how successful the first entry fares with audiences. You know how these things operate.

WITHER is set in a future where the world’s in a state of panic due to a failed effort to create a perfect race that’s left women with a lifespan of 20 years while men die at 25.

The book series follows a kidnapped girl and her attempt to escape from a forced polygamous marriage designed to keep the population from dying out.

Aside from the forced polygamous marriage, the whole lifespan angle is quite similar to IN TIME, don’t you think? Of course, IN TIME was not based on a novel, but derived from Andrew Niccol’s mind. How genre-centric WITHER will be is anyone’s guess. The cover of the book makes it seem like another TWILIGHT inspired story for teenage girls. You disagree?
