Tom Hanks to Play Abraham Lincoln in an Adaptation of George Saunders’ Lincoln in the Bardo

After playing real-life personalities like Walt Disney, pilot Chesley Sullenberger, and Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Tom Hanks is ready to get fitted for a stovepipe hat to play the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, in an adaptation of George Saunders’ New York Times best-selling and 2017 Booker Prize-winning novel Lincoln in the Bardo.

Hanks’ new film is stop-motion animated?!

Hanks’ latest project hails from Starburns Industries. Interestingly, the film combines live-action and stop-motion animation. I did not see that coming. In addition to playing Lincoln, Hanks will produce via his Playtone studio with partner Gary Goetzman. According to Deadline, Hanks “will portray a live-action version of the President who made his mark in history by abolishing slavery and leading the U.S. through the Civil War.” Production will take place in London. Duke Johnson, who directed 2015’s Anomalisa alongside Andy Kaufman, will occupy the director’s chair for Lincoln in the Bardo, in addition to producing.

What are the vibes for Lincoln in the Bardo?

Lincoln in the Bardo will employ a unique blend of stop-motion animation and live action to explore one of the most intimate moments of Lincoln’s life, centering on his relationship with his recently deceased 11-year-old son.  The movie will explore themes of love, empathy, and human capacity in the face of grief as the story unfolds through an ensemble of characters, both living and dead, historical and invented,” Deadline reports.

Hanks returns for another Toy Story

Beyond Lincoln in the Bardo, Hanks will reprise his iconic role as Woody in Pixar’s upcoming Toy Story 5 sequel. He joins Joan Cusack (Jessie), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), Keanu Reeves (Duke Caboom), Greta Lee (Lily Pad), Annie Potts (Bo Peep), Bonnie Hunt (Dolly), Wallace Shawn (Rex), John Ratzenberger (Hamm), Kristen Schaal (Trixie), Ernie Hudson (Combat Carl), and more for the fifth installment of the animated blockbuster franchise. In the upcoming film, Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime.

Are we ready for America’s Sweetheart, Tom Hanks, to play Abraham Lincoln? How do you think the mix of live-action and stop-motion animation will work in Johnson’s upcoming film? I have so many questions. Typically, something like this isn’t my bag, but the addition of stop-motion has me intrigued. I loved Anomalisa back in the day. It made me all kinds of uncomfortable, for reasons I won’t divulge here, but if you know, you know. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more details about Lincoln in the Bardo.
