The live-action adaptation One Piece is nearing its premiere after a long wait, and now Netflix has offered the first video look at the Straw Hat Pirates, headed by Monkey D. Luffy.

One Piece is based on Eiichiro Oda’s wildly popular manga book series of the same name. There are more than 100 volumes of One Piece, which have collectively sold over 500 million copies, making it the best-selling comic series in history. So suck on that, Charlie Brown! This live-action series is just the latest adaptation of the manga, as it has previously been turned into more than a dozen theatrically released animated features, an anime with more than 1,000 episodes and more.

One Piece has been evolving at Netflix for quite some time now, with negotiations beginning back in 2016. On the development, Oda said, “We’ve been hard at work this entire time. And now, each and every entity involved is working in sync. We’re finally here!! Considering my expected life span, I believe this is the last chance to bring One Piece to the entire world. If we’re going to do it, I want to be able to supervise things while I’m still active.”

One Piece “follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King.” The cast includes Iñaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy), Mackenyu (Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp), and Taz Skylar (Sanji), a team that co-creators Matt Owens and Steven Maeda are ecstatic about, previously saying, “Finding the right people to pull off the looks, emotions, and actions of the iconic Straw Hats was a long and challenging (and fun!) process. Much like the search for the One Piece itself. But we have finally found the perfect fits!…You will come to know and love them just as much as their manga counterparts. All of us can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with! Onward to adventure!”

Netflix is obviously showing One Piece, Oda and the rest of the project – which is a joint production with Tomorrow Studios, who also co-produced 2021’s Cowboy Bebop series – a lot of respect, as this video unveiling was selected to cap off Tudum.

No release date has been set but One Piece will premiere on Netflix later this year.
