When it comes to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, there’s really only one trooper that stole the show, and fans have affectionately named him TR-8R. You may remember him as the only Stormtrooper we’ve seen go toe-to-toe with someone brandishing a lightsaber, and if it wasn’t for Han Solo, Finn would’ve been wrecked! Given the uprising of memes dedicated to the man, Lucasfilm has decided to offer up some details about the character. His real name, for starters, is FN-2199.
FN-2199, or “Nines,” served with Finn in the same squad, so that explains why this particular trooper seems to have such disdain for him. Nines is also part of the riot control squad, which is why he’s wielding that badass Z6 baton, as it’s called. The baton is described as non-lethal, but can obviously dish out some damage when it’s in the right hands.
As for some behind-the-scenes trivia, the part of FN-2199 was played by stunt performer Liang Yang, while the voice was provided by David Acord, a Skywalker Sound sound editor. It doesn’t look like Nines will be returning for EPISODE VIII, but it would be cool if the sequel delved deeper into the relationship Finn had with some of his squad mates. Perhaps we’ll see more of that with Captain Phasma?
