Idris Elba may have aged out of playing James Bond, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be delivering another great character to fans, as detective chief inspector John Luther will be returning to the screen next year. With the film–the first, following five series–four months out, first look images have been revealed.

In a piece published in Empire, Idris Elba teased some details about the locations and scope of the upcoming Luther movies. “We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that…It also gives [series creator and writer] Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.”

Elba previously said a Luther movie would have “more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther…essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well.” There’s no word on exactly how many more Volvos there will be, but Idris Elba is making good on the international aspect, as seen in the image below:

Elba built on this, saying, “We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit…And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience.”

In addition to Idris Elba, the cast also includes Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis–“Erivo will play a detective who also happens to be Luther’s nemesis while Serkis will play the criminal villain of the film.” The film will be directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed all four episodes of series five.

Series one of Luther aired in 2010 while the most recent fifth series concluded in 2019. Viewership for Luther was at an all-time high for that season, showing its fanbase was as strong as ever.

Luther will be released on March 23, 2023.

What do you think about the first look at the upcoming Luther movie? Will you be watching when it comes out next year?
