Mad Max 5 may begin filming in Australia this fall

When MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was released in 2015, MAD MAX franchise creator George Miller made it clear that FURY ROAD was not going to be the last we saw of Max Rockatansky, the character who was played by Mel Gibson in the first three films and by Tom Hardy in FURY ROAD. Miller said he had more Max stories in mind, and even gave the title for the fifth film – MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND. The director planned to make another film, something smaller, and then dive into THE WASTELAND.

Five years later, Miller still hasn't gone into production on another film, although he does have a romantic epic called THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING in the works, with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton attached to star. For a while it looked like the future of the MAD MAX franchise was in jeopardy because Miller's company Kennedy Miller had to take FURY ROAD distributor Warner Bros. to court over unpaid earnings. But several months ago, Miller indicated that the issue between him and Warner Bros. was close to being resolved… and now it looks like things are all good between them, because Geeks WorldWide is reporting that Warner Bros. has officially given MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND the greenlight.

According to GWW, Miller will finally start filming THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING in March, then the new MAD MAX film will go into production this fall. While FURY ROAD was primarily filmed in Namibia so Miller could get the dry desert look he needed, the new film will be returning to the franchise's home country of Australia.

Since neither Warner Bros. or Miller have announced the news we have to take this as a RUMOR for now, but the fact that a listing for MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND has shown up in the latest issue of Production Weekly is a good sign.

Hopefully THE WASTELAND really will be filming by the end of this year. I can't wait to see what Miller does with it. We'll keep you updated on the project as further details are revealed.
