In news that redefines his catchphrase of "mediocre!", we are sad to report that Hugh Keays-Byrne has died at the age of 73. Best known for his four-decade tenure playing villains in the Mad Max franchise, Keays-Byrne was best known as Toecutter in George Miller's 1979 original and most recently as Immortan Joe in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road.
Born in India, the Australian actor has also appeared in Shakespearean productions as well as the cult-favorite series Farscape in which he portrayed Grunchik. George Miller cast the late actor in Fury Road as a way of making up for a poor audio dub of his role in the original Mad Max. Miller also was planning on having Keays-Byrne play the motion-captured Martian Manhunter in his canceled Justice League film.
In addition to playing memorable villains for Miller's sought-after Mad Max series, Keays-Byrne's acting credits include contributions to films like Stone (1974), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), The Trespassers (1976), Going Down (1982), Strikebound (1984), The Blood of Heroes (1989) and Huntsman 5.1 (1999). It's also worth noting, I think, that a young Keays-Byrne bears a striking resemblance to King Buzzo of The Melvins, which is just awesome.
Hugh Keays-Byrne is far from a household name like the late Sean Connery and Alex Trebek, but his impact on fan-favorite movies like Mad Max hits close to home in a year already filled with tragedy and loss. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
