Magpie: Tuppence Middleton of Sense8 to star in religious horror film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Tuppence Middleton, whose credits include Jupiter Ascending, Dickensian, Sense8, the Downton Abbey movie, Mank, and Possessor, has signed on to star in the religious horror film Magpie, which will mark the fictional feature directorial debut of Dean Puckett. The story is based on a short film Puckett made in 2018 called The Sermon.

Magpie is the name of the lead character,

who lives in an isolated church community ruled over by her father The Pastor. When a man is murdered, paranoia sets in and rumours begin of a strange ‘Beast’ living in the forest. Suspicions fall on enigmatic outsider Mary Edwards, forcing Magpie to question her loyalties as a witch hunt begins.

Newcomer Buket Komur will be playing Magpie, while Middleton takes on the role of Mary Edwards. Max Harwood and Thomas Turgoose are also in the cast.

Puckett said,

The central idea of Magpie is that when we are scared, we create beasts and monsters out of the things that we do not understand, when in reality there is nothing more terrifying than the evil that people do to one another."

Rebecca Wolff of Grasp The Nettle is producing the film, while Sophie Green and Stephen Kelliher serve as executive producers.

We'll keep you updated on Magpie (which was originally being developed under the title I Feel Blood) as more is revealed. If you're interested in Puckett's short film The Sermon, it can be seen right here:
