Yahya Abdul-Mateen II talks about how his version differs from Denzel Washington’s in Man on Fire

It was only recently that I learned that Man on Fire was actually a book and has been adapted multiple times. To me, Tony Scott’s film with Denzel Washington was the only version and I was ignorant to any other versions. But now that Netflix is releasing a re-imagining of the story, I’ve learned of the extensive history of John Creasy. Now, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is stepping into the role and making it his own. While there are certainly some parallels to the 2004 film, this tv adaptation follows its own path. You can check out Alex Maidy’s review HERE and, despite a few missteps, I’d say it’s an entertaining show overall.

I’m not sure there’s anyone as effortlessly cool as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The moment our interview started, the man’s charisma was palpable. It’s one of the many reasons that the actor has been so must-see in recent years. He also starred in the very popular Wonder Man (which was recently announced for a second season). Given the man has starred in blockbusters such as Aquaman and The Matrix Resurrections, Yahya discusses the differences between big budget TV versus big budget films. He also gets into the exciting challenge of the action beats in the show, and how he hopes it’ll stick with him in life. This was a great talk that you can check out in the video above.

Man on Fire plot:

Based on A.J. Quinnell’s book series, Man on Fire tells the story of John Creasy. Once a high-functioning and skilled Special Forces Mercenary, known for surviving even the most desolate of situations, Creasy is now plagued with intense PTSD. Determined to overcome his personal demons, he sets out on a path to redemption. But, before he can adjust to this new life, he finds himself back in the fire, fighting harder than ever.

Man on Fire is streaming on Netflix on April 30th, 2026.
