Mank early reactions David Fincher

It has been over five years since David Fincher has graced us with a major motion picture and if you think he might've lost some of his touch since directing GONE GIRL back in 2014, the early social media response to his potential Oscar contender, MANK, should assure you that Fincher is still one of the best in the game working today.

MANK is a very personal film for Fincher as it comes from a screenplay written by his late father, Jack Fincher. It's a story about old Hollywood, where Fincher is allowed to recapture the era of the 1930s and 40s through the story of Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman), the screenwriter who wrote the screenplay for CITIZEN KANE. Although director Orson Welles later tried to take most of the credit, the film will explore all the muddied waters that led to that film's creation while also putting a focus on his struggle with alcoholism, his wandering eye toward actress Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried), and his conflicted ties to newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance).

The film has Oscar written all over it and given the early response on social media, Fincher may want to have a speech prepared because he could be the one to beat when the envelopes are opened. It's a very odd year and it may be hard to view Oscar season in the traditional sense but MANK is looking like one to stand out in the crowd. MANK debuts on Netflix on December 4, 2020, and will be playing in select theaters in November. You can check out some of the social media reactions to the film below!
