Mare of Easttown Season 2: Kate Winslet would love to return for more

Mare of Easttown, season 2, Kate Winslet, HBO

Don't worry, you won't find any spoilers for Mare of Easttown here because I haven't finished the series myself yet. Created by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel, Mare of Easttown stars Kate Winslet as Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective who investigates a local murder as her own life crumbles around her. The series came to a close this weekend and actually set a record as the most-watched episode on HBO Max during the first 24 hours of availability. It's also one of very few HBO series that saw consecutive growth week-to-week, and although the series was designed for a limited run, I can't imagine that its success will be ignored.

It remains to be seen whether or not there will be a second season of Mare of Easttown, but from the sounds of things, Kate Winslet would be down to return. Winslet told TVLine that she would "absolutely love to play Mare again. I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role… There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her." As fun as it's been spending time with Mare and the murder mystery at the heart of the series, sometimes things can just…end, and that's okay. We don't always need another season, another sequel, or another revival, but what the hell do I know. Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby told The Playlist that while a second season isn't in the cards, he knows better than to rule it out completely.

It was always conceived as one season. If I had a great idea, I guess, I would consider it. If I was convinced I could do justice to the characters and the world and also the fans who have embraced the show. So, it’s never say never. I don’t have that idea right now. But if I had an idea that I was convinced could be great and would allow us to spend time with these people, and also be a great mystery and thriller, then I would definitely consider it. I don’t have that idea at the moment, but I would definitely consider it because I love Mare and I love Helen, and the idea that they get to spend time in my living room again would be hilarious to me.

You can check out all seven episodes of Mare of Easttown right now, as well as a review from our own Alex Maidy. Would you like to see a second season of Mare of Easttown?
