Bodies, Bodies, Bodies: Borat’s Maria Bakalova to star in A24 slasher

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova had several screen acting credits to her name before she was cast as Borat's daughter Tutar Sagdiyev in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, but that film has turned out to be a major breakthrough for her, and she has even earned an Oscar nomination for her performance. So it's very cool that she is choosing to follow up this major success by taking a role in a "secret slasher" project set up at A24.

This slasher is called Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, and we first heard about it when A24 acquired the spec script written by Kristen Roupenian three years ago. At that time, the script was said to show "heightened sensitivity to character development and social dynamics in a subversive way." It was described as

a shrewd character study where mystery and deep-seated scares blended in such a way that the company saw an opportunity to make a horror movie that could also be culturally relevant

Halina Reijn, who made her feature directorial debut with the 2019 Dutch thriller Instinct, will be directing Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. The Hate U Give's Amandla Stenberg is set to star in the film alongside Bakalova. Pete Davidson of Saturday Night Live and Myha'la Herrold of the HBO series Industry are also in talks to join the cast.

Bodies, Bodies, Bodies is being produced by A24's David Hinojosa.
