Even after the iconic Luke Skywalker died in The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill will never cease to be followed by the franchise. The actor would show up in a de-aged form for the Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett shows. Now, fans could also consider the possibility of Skywalker to make a return as a force ghost in the announced future Star Wars film which would see Daisy Ridley’s Rey return to train a new generation of Jedi. Hamill is currently making the rounds promoting his new project, The Machine, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hamill is inevitably asked about the notion of more Skywalker force ghost sightings.
The Daisy Ridley Star Wars project is still in development and it’s common practice for studios to play their cameo plans close to the chest, so Hamill would emphasize, “Everything is confidential. So, if I were involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. And if I were not involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. So, I don’t know. We’ll all find out together, I guess.“ Although, in the THR interview, the interviewer would ask what his expectations are that they might come to him with an offer to make an appearance of some nature in the new Jedi-centric film. Hamill replies, “No, I don’t have any expectations of that happening.”
As de-aging and AI voice technology gets better and better, Hamill’s cameos in the new Star Wars shows would prompt fans to consider if there could be more with Luke from that era. “People say, ‘Oh, now you’re going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-Return of the Jedi.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so,’ First of all, they don’t need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor.” Hamill would allude to the cost of animating an age-specific character for a series run as he explains it “can’t be cheap.”
Luke had gone through much hardship by the time we caught up with him in The Force Awakens, the THR reporter addresses the way Hamill had gotten very emotional after filming had cut on the scene of Luke sitting with R2-D2 watching the Jedi temple burn down. Hamill would explain his reaction, “Well, the whole thing was emotional, because when I read [Episode] VIII, I knew it was over. So I was relishing every moment, but also saying goodbye to all those people that I had associated with over the years. So I still miss them.”
