Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island hits DVD/Blu-Ray in June

My favorite flick so far this year is SHUTTER ISLAND, which for me is like a blueprint on how to expertly make a film. Martin Scorsese’s mastery of the medium is always on display, and as the eerie, tragic tale of Marshal Teddy Daniels unfolds, you’re further enveloped in his genius. This is a movie that I think some dismissed a little too quickly upon first seeing it as predictable and “lesser Scorsese” (although it did very well at the box office), but I’m confidant that it will, in time, be regarded very highly, and certainly as one of the director’s better recent films.

I’m happy to report that SHUTTER ISLAND has just been given a DVD/Blu-Ray release date: JUNE 8th. Unfortunately, there’s a lack of special features, but what is included should prove interesting:

o Behind the Shutters — Follows the film from its inception as an acclaimed novel through the production process and to the big screen. Includes interviews with cast and crew.

o Into the Lighthouse — Discusses the historical landscape of psychiatric therapies during the 1950s through interviews with cast and crew.

That could be creepy, because the whole “therapy” aspect of the movie is what’s really chilling. I really would have liked to find that Scorsese recorded a commentary for this (the man has always been down to do one), but it would appear as though they skipped it. Too bad, but I’ll still be picking the film up when it’s released in a couple months…
