The synopsis for writer/director Ruth Platt’s horror film Martyrs Lane describes it as an “unsettling ghost story”, and judging by the trailer embedded above it does indeed look like this movie could be quite unsettling. We’ll be able to find out soon enough, as it has been announced that Martyrs Lane will be released through the Shudder streaming service on Thursday, September 9th. Shudder is releasing the movie in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Martyrs Lane is a feature expansion (the running time is 96 minutes) of a short film Platt made in 2019. Here’s the aforementioned synopsis:

In this unsettling ghost story, Leah, 10, lives in a large, old house with her family but can’t quite work out why her mother seems so distant. At night she is visited by a mysterious guest, who might be able to give her some answers. With a new challenge every night, Leah is rewarded with bits of knowledge that, when pieced together, threaten to shine a dangerous light on both the truth in her nightmares and of the world she lives in.

A further description of the film says it’s a deeply personal exploration of love and grief through a dark and captivating ghost story.

Kiera Thompson (The Salisbury Poisonings), Sienna Sayer (Silent Witness), Denise Gough (A Dark Place), Steven Cree (Terminator: Dark Fate), Hannah Rae (Fighting with My Family), and Anastasia Hille (The Missing) star.

Martyrs Lane was produced by Christine Alderson and Katie Hodgkin for Ipso Facto Productions. It was developed and financed by the BFI, Lipsync, and Sharp House.

Platt previously directed the 2015 horror thriller The Lesson and the 2019 comedy drama The Black Forest. I haven’t seen those movies, but I’m definitely interested in checking out Martyrs Lane once it’s available to watch on Shudder.
