Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the filmmaking duo known as The Daniels, may finally have a star for their follow-up to Everything Everywhere All at Once, as THR reports that Matt Damon is in talks to join the project. Not only that, but the first plot details may have been revealed.
The Mystery Project
According to the outlet, the new film apparently involves “global warming, time travel, as well as a possible superhero angle.” It is also said that the story features two timelines: one set in the 1980s and the other in the present day. The protagonists of the story are teenagers, at least in the ’80s timeline.
Ryan Gosling was originally eyed to star as the father of one of the teens, but he thought the role should be larger and asked for changes to the script. The Daniels were willing to make those changes, but the project has received a California tax credit and must start production by the end of summer or early fall. Doing another rewrite wasn’t going to work with that timetable.
So, Gosling left, and the Daniels were left searching for a new star. Jack Black was reportedly considered at one point before they turned to Damon.
The Odyssey
Damon is starring in what will likely be one of the biggest movies of the summer: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. He plays Odysseus, the cunning King of Ithaca, and follows his long, brutal journey home after the Trojan War, as he battles gods, monsters, and fate itself in a desperate attempt to reunite with his wife and son.
The actor has said that making the movie had “a profound effect on me.” He added that it feels like the last big movie shot on film that he’s ever going to make. “Doing The Odyssey this last year, it felt like my one chance in my life to make a David Lean movie,” he said, “that I was making the last big movie on film that I was ever gonna get to make.“
In addition to Damon, The Odyssey stars Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Logan Marshall-Green, Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Stewart, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, and Elyes Gabel. The film is set to be released in theaters on July 17.
