McG has signed to direct the film ME AND MY MONSTER, about a boy and his friendship with a strange creature who changes the course of his life. After the CHARLIE’S ANGELS movies, this sounds like somewhat of a departure for McG, but then again so did WE ARE MARSHALL, and look how that turned out (not well). I initially thought that glossy pseudo-action pictures were McG’s niche, but it looks like the guy is trying to branch out, or at least find a genre he’s comfortable in. Maybe the letdown of CHARLIE’S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE discouraged him a bit, and he’s lost in genre purgatory. Or maybe he’s divers, who knows? Jake Gyllenhaal was originally supposed to star but it’s unclear if he’s still attached to the project, which is set for release sometime in 2009.
