Lately Eddie Murphy comedies have become a source of ridicule, amongst scholars and philistines alike. The fact that NORBIT was nominated for an Oscar became one of the most played-out punchlines of the 2008 awards season. Based on the trailer for his new effect-driven comedy MEET DAVE, Eddie will likely face the same kind of wrath from moviegoers and critics alike, but I was somewhat impressed. Even though the title features the same red-block font against white background as pretty much all his comedies do, at least this isn’t Murphy playing stock characters in pounds of makeup. This movie looks to have some imagination, with a side of creativity. Wait, I just watched it again—and no, this isn’t some writing gimmick, I actually did just watch it a second time—and I take back what I said before. This film looks pretty awful. It’s not funny, that’s for sure. I don’t need to tell you what it’s about. Check it out BELOW and see for yourself. But I promise you this: you won’t laugh. Check it out on July 11th.
