Meet the cast of Jon Chu’s Jem and the Holograms movie

Jon Chu‘s fast developing JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS movie has now cast the band members for the live action adaptation of the 1980s cartoon. Mere weeks after being announced, the musical film has already found a lead singer and supporting players in the form of four up and coming young actresses led by Aubrey Peeples.

Peeples is best known for her role on the ABC musical series NASHVILLE as well as other TV roles. The rest of the band will be played by Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Jem’s sister, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, and Hayley Kiyoko as Aja. All of the actresses are currently appearing on TV series and this will mark their major studio debuts.

We also have a plot for JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS:

Ryan Landels wrote the script, which, per the producers, centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS is being “reimagined” for a new generation so while we can expect nods to the cartoon, I would imagine the music will all be contemporary, possibly with some updated tunes based on those from the series. Chu and his production team have been taking fan input for the design of the TV series which may make JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS a multi-platform and somewhat interactive production, likely the first in many to follow.

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS has no release date but expect to see it sometime next year or possibly later this year. Below is the first official teaser image from the production, courtesy of AMC Movie News.
