Meg LeFauve on the attraction and challenges of writing Captain Marvel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Earlier today a few new pieces of Marvel's Phase Three came to light, the most interesting being that of an ANT-MAN sequel which will see Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) returning alongside Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. With the addition of the ANT-MAN sequel to Marvel's Phase Three slate, a few previously scheduled films were shuffled around, including the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL.

Meg LeFauve, who will be penning the film along with Nicole Perlman, spoke briefly with Collider where she expressed her excitement at bringing a new Marvel hero to the big-screen as well as the challenges that come with bringing a powerful female superhero to life:

Yeah, we haven’t started yet! We have not started yet. We just got the phone call to come over to Marvel. But for me personally, the wonderful thing about her and the challenge of her is going to be that she’s a female superhero. And that is awesome because she’s so powerful, and how hard is that going to be because she’s so powerful? We don’t want the Superman curse. “What’s her vulnerability?” is what we have to figure out.

I can understand why Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman want to avoid simply throwing a female version of Superman up on the screen; Superman's incredible power coupled with his inherent "goodness" has led to the character coming across as boring in the past, but when the right story and writer(s) got behind the character, he can be just as compelling as the rest.

With over three years left to go before CAPTAIN MARVEL premieres, hopefully LeFauve and Perlman will have plenty of time to get the character right. Marvel producer Jeremy Latcham has faith that the pair will succeed, saying "we have really amazing writers on the movie. Meg [LeFauve] and Nicole [Perlman] are great, and I think getting the character right first is going to lead the charge. We want to make sure we know who it is before we can start figuring out who should play it."

CAPTAIN MARVEL will be unleashed on March 8, 2019.
