Nine days after learning MGM had tapped Brazilian director Jose Padilha (ELITE SQUAD) to helm the oft-stalled ROBOCOP reboot, the studio has found itself a writer…

Deadline is reporting that Josh Zetumer has been hired to pen the script to the redo of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi classic. A pretty bold move given the man’s inexperience. In his defense, he did pen the blacklisted INFILTRATOR, a spy thriller that Warner Bros. may set up with Leo DiCaprio. Zetumer also wrote drafts of the equally delayed DUNE rehash, as well as the fourth BOURNE IDENTITY flick, though the latter was eschewed for a spinoff with original scribe Tony Gilroy. So, not so much inexperienced, as unlucky. That is, until now…

For MGM, the studio looks to be back at full throat, with THE HOBBIT and the newest JAMES BOND flick in the works. ROBOCOP is a property they were trying to resurrect before going broke, as you know with Darren Aronofsky once attached.

For all you youngens, Verhoeven’s ROBOCOP was set in a dystopic & crime ridden Detroit, where a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him.
