Michael Bay confirms that he will return to direct Transformers 5

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

I'll admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS franchise, but I must be in the minority because those films make some serious money. So far Michael Bay has directed each of the four existing TRANSFORMERS films, the latest being TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION, but it wasn't entirely certain whether he'd fill the same role on the fifth installment of the franchise. While speaking to Rolling Stone about his upcoming Benghazi film, 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI, the director gave an update on his upcoming projects, including a confirmation that he'll be back in the director's chair for TRANSFORMERS 5.

"I'm doing Transformers … 5, is it?" Bay says, temporarily losing track. He shakes his head. "I've taken on a lot of work."

Even though Bay had previously said that he likely wouldn't return to direct the upcoming fifth installment, I had little doubt that he'd change his mind before the cameras rolled, especially after Mark Wahlberg suspected as much last summer. As I stated up front, Bay's TRANSFORMERS films don't do a whole lot for me, but obviously he's been able to tap into something that people want to see so…hey, no use complaining; however, every time one of these TRANSFORMERS films rolls around, I find myself hoping to see someone other than Michael Bay or one of this look-a-likes taking on the job, if only to see this universe would look were it presented in a different style. I may get my chance, as Bay concluded the interview by saying that "I still have a great time. It's fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else." Sure it is Michael, sure it is.

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI is set for a January 15, 2016 release.
