Is Michael Bay coming back to direct the next Transformers installment?

Post-Bay Transformers

After five explosive entries in the Transformers franchise since its live-action adaptation in 2007, Michael Bay would seemingly try to pass the baton to other filmmakers. We would get few genuinely good films with Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts and Transformers One. Despite the critical and fan reception improving considerably, the post-Bay Transformers movies never quite reached the height of box office numbers that his chaotic entries would reach.

Incidentally, Bay’s post-Transformers action films like 6 Underground and Ambulance have also not made the kind of box office splash that his movies usually do.

Will Bay make a return?

Deadline is reporting that Paramount and Hasbro have reached out to series executive producer Steven Spielberg to focus all creative aspects of the next Transformers film along with series producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The team is getting back together with Michael Bay in early talks to return to the robots in disguise franchise. Spielberg is now said to be leading the creative direction of the eighth live-action entry. Spielberg and Bay’s series would gross more than $5.4 billion in worldwide box office revenue, which turned Hasbro’s toy brand into a worldwide phenomenon and a worthy Hollywood studio.

Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will also be on board to produce the new entry, which is said to capture the spirit of the earlier films.

This next installment is being developed from a script that was written by Jason Fuchs. Plot details are currently under wraps. The only detail that is known is that it will take place in modern day.

Other Bay projects

Meanwhile, Bay is set to direct a movie for Universal Pictures, which will tell the true story of the recent rescue mission to save two downed pilots behind enemy lines in Iran. The film will be based on the upcoming book by Mitchell Zuckoff, which will be published in 2027. When an F-15E Strike Eagle was downed during Operation Epic Fury in early April, two U.S. airmen were left trapped behind enemy lines in the Zagros Mountains of Iran. A massive rescue mission was launched, and the extraction successfully recovered the pilot and the weapons systems officer. The mission quickly drew international attention and caught Bay’s eye as a potential project.
