There are a handful of video game adaptations that are screaming for the big screen treatment. Up until recently, many of them could not be done justice with limited special effects, but with the technology Hollywood now possesses, there should be nothing holding these franchises back from the big screen.
One of those franchises still awaiting a movie is CASTLEVANIA. There have been several aborted attempts to bring it to theaters: in 2000, Paul WS Anderson was attached and then again in 2009 James Wan was going to give it a shot. Neither has come to fruition. But, now we have heard the project may be moving ahead.
Michael Dorn (ake Lieutenant Commander Worf from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION and DEEP SPACE NINE) recently told StarTrek.com that he has been cast as a werewolf in the upcoming film adaptation of CASTLEVANIA.
Castlevania is a movie that Marina [Sirtis] got me involved with. It’s based on a video game. People have been trying to get this thing done for a long time and they finally got the producers together that want to do it. They finally got the OK from the owners, and so they’re doing it. It’s a fun little part. It’s four days, and I’m playing a werewolf that’s been around for a gajillion years who works for this vampire. It’s not too far from Worf because there’s a lot of killing and jumping and sword fights and everything.
I must apologize in advance since I am a STAR TREK fan, but Michael Dorn playing a role tells me this is likely not a big budget Hollywood adaptation. Dorn’s name screams SyFy original movie directed by Uwe Boll. Sorry, Michael, but this news does not make me confident in the final product.
The CASTLEVANIA game series has existed since the early days of the NES and follows Simon Belmont, a descendant of the Belmont clan, a family of vampire hunters. He travels to Dracula’s demonic castle, Castlevania and fights his way through the castle destroying Dracula himself and the castle. Belmont’s main weapon is a whip called “Vampire Killer”, while the secondary weapons are powered by Hearts, collected by attacking candles and killing monsters. Secondary weapons available are Daggers, Holy Water, Flying Axe and the Boomerang-esque Flying Cross.
Current video games are so cinematic that many rival the real deal from a studio. A live action CASTLEVANIA deserves the treatment like this trailer below.
