Michael Fassbender thinks Assassin’s Creed took itself too seriously

Michael Fassbender Assassin's Creed

For a while, it seemed as though Justin Kurzel's ASSASSIN'S CREED would finally break the so-called video-game curse, but those hopes were soon dashed when the film arrived with all the enthusiasm of a wet fart. While speaking with Movie’n’co (via The Playlist), ASSASSIN'S CREED star Michael Fassbender weighed in on the what went wrong with the film and what he'd do differently if he got the chance.

For sure, it wasn’t ideal. I think we missed an opportunity there a little bit. So we’ll wait and see what Ubisoft are coming up with. But right now I don’t know. I would make it more entertaining, that’s really the main note. The feeling of the film, I think it took itself too seriously and I would get to the action a lot quicker. I think there’s three beginnings of the film, which is a mistake.

A little sense of fun certainly wouldn't have been unwelcome in ASSASSIN'S CREED, but I doubt that it would have saved the film. Ubisoft had hoped that the film would be the first of a new franchise, but given its lackluster reception, that seems unlikely now. A sequel was in the process of being developed before the release of the first film, which Justin Kurzel hoped to set during the Cold War in 1950's America.

I thought about maybe not going too far back, maybe into, like, the ’50’s in America. You know, I think that could be a really interesting period around the Cold War. Traditionally, I think they’ve gone back further than that. Recent history is something I’m quite interested in. You can definitely kind of do a film-noir thing to it.

What do you folks think? Did ASSASSIN'S CREED take itself too seriously? Should the franchise be given a second chance?
