Michael Fassbender was almost The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man

Marvel may be feeding us information about their third film in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy at a snail's pace, but that doesn't mean that we can't learn cool things about the Spidey films of yesteryear.

Recently concept artist Jerad S. Marantz posted a stunning image of The Lizard from Sony's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN to his personal Instagram account. Alongside the image, Marantz revealed that X-Men movie alum Michael Fassbender was once considered to play the film's villain, The Lizard / Dr. Curt Connors. As you know, the role ultimately ended up going to Rhys Ifans (NOTTING HILL, LITTLE NICKY), who was more than willing to lend a unique intensity to the fan favorite character.

While it certainly would have been interesting to see Fassbender's approach to the man-turned-monster, he passed on the role in favor of starring as Magneto for Matthew Vaughn's X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Obviously, this decision worked out quite well for him, seeing as he'd continued to play the villain for a total of three more X-films, including X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX.

So far, The Lizard has yet to be referenced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That said, we do know that Sony is in the midst of setting up its own Sinister Six, so there's always a chance that the scale-covered villain with razor-sharp talons could show up.

What do you think of Marantz's design? Would you have preferred that Fassbender take on the role of The Lizard / Dr. Curt Connors after all? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
