With just about three weeks away from being traveled, John Hillcoat’s THE ROAD is still looking to be among the strongest of late-year contenders. It’s got a hell of a pedigree: Cormac McCarthy source material, a strong visual storyteller in John Hillcoat (THE PROPOSITION), very fine actors (Viggo, Charlize, Bob Duvall, etc.), shot by Javier Aguirresarobe (THE OTHERS, THE SEA INSIDE) – you get the idea.
At this point, the only other measuring stick for me becomes how THE ROAD stacks up with the last McCarthy adaptation, Joel and Ethan Coen’s NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. Although I think will Hillcoat’s film will be good if not great, I really don’t see how it could eclipse the effort of the brothers, in particular the work of Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones. I’m just sayin’!
That being said, and given the new images from the film, THE ROAD looks to kick mucho derriere. Don’t you think?
Get on THE ROAD November 25th.
