Mortal Kombat reboot was going to be a “hard-R Avengers”

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Growing up, I was always a MORTAL KOMBAT kid. I loved the games, the movies (yes, even ANNIHILATION to a certain extent), and the Saturday morning cartoon (which, yes, did exist). I pretty much love everything MORTAL KOMBAT…well, save that one TV show. And SUB-ZERO: MYTHOLOGIES.

Now I've been waiting for a film reboot for awhile now (as most people who felt burned by the second film have), and while it's had its fits and starts, it seems to have finally gained momentum with James Wan producing the reboot with commercial director Simon McQuoid at the helm.

Anyway, Collider got a chance to talk to Oren Uziel about his feature debut SHIMMER LAKE; however, Uziel also happened to be the screenwriter who wrote the first draft of the MORTAL KOMBAT reboot script (though, as he explains, it's unclear how much of his draft has been retained). Here's what he said it would've been like:

Well…I don’t know what remains of this, but I know that it was going to be—it’s almost like if you took The Avengers, or if you took a storyline like that and set it in a sort of hard-R, over-the-top violence and hard-edged world of Mortal Kombat. It was a little bit like that, it was a little bit like a Wanted-type story that brought together a bunch of these characters and just pulled zero punches, and had a tone that was still fun but very dark.

Again, there's no telling how close the new version will be to Uziel's version, but an R-rated AVENGERS sounds pretty fucking awesome. So hopefully whatever Wan and McQuoid have in store will be in a similar vain, or if not something better. One thing's for sure, it better be bloody-as-hell. As much as I love the first one, that was always left something to be desired.

Meanwhile, no release date yet for the James Wan-produced adaptation, but hopefully it gets over here sooner rather than later.
