Captain Marvel currently tracking for heroic $100+ million opening weekend

Marvel has been doing some of its best business at the box office ever over the last two years, with all of the movies since GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 making over $100 million during their opening weekend (with the exception of ANT-MAN AND THE WASP). The hits will likely keep coming with the arrival of CAPTAIN MARVEL next month, and right now early projections are looking terrific with a projected $100+ million currently in its sights.

With three weeks left to go before release, the estimates are looking very healthy for Marvel’s first female-led blockbuster, starring Brie Larson as the title hero. Given Marvel’s track record it’s safe to say the movie will meet these expectations, and in the coming weeks that number could go higher (further, faster) to around $120 million, which would be in line with the likes of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and THOR: RAGNAROK. Though a far cry from the $200+ million openings of last year’s BLACK PANTHER and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, should MARVEL’s estimates go to the higher end of projections it will give it one of the biggest openings ever for a debut character’s solo movie.

Opening at these current projections would place it in line with the opening of DC’s WONDER WOMAN, which opened to $103 million back in June 2017. That was exceeding expectations, as pundits initially predicted something a bit lower around the $90 million mark. Should CAPTAIN MARVEL open even slightly below expectations it would be by far the biggest opening weekend of the year, numbers 2019 very much needs after a lackluster showing from many of the releases this year – even LEGO MOVIE 2 – which came in well below expectations.

One thing certainly helping the movie’s projections is not only the fact it’s the first female-led movie in the MCU – which is certainly a reason to be excited – but also the fact the character was teased at the end of INFINITY WAR. There’s a lot of speculation around how the character will factor into the movie, and where the events of her own solo outing (taking place in the 90s) will position her come the events of The Snap.

CAPTAIN MARVEL is in theaters March 8.
