Charlie Cox says HIS Daredevil is not in the next Spider-Man sequel

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

There has been a rumor that has gained traction recently that Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil would be in appearing in the next SPIDER-MAN sequel. Given how SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME ended, it's possible Peter Parker/Spider-Man could be in need of a good lawyer and it would be a fun way to usher Matt Murdock into the MCU but according to Charlie Cox, if the powers that be are planning on bringing Daredevil into the fold, it will not be his version of the character.

Charlie Cox played "the man without fear" for three seasons on the popular Daredevil series on Netflix which amassed a sizeable fan following. During a Zoom chat with "ComicBook.com", Cox addressed the rumor and not only did he say he hadn't heard about them, but he also doesn't believe if it happens that his Daredevil will be the one coming to the big screen:

"I hadn't heard those rumors, but it's certainly not with my Daredevil. I'm not involved in it… If that's true, it's not with me. It's with another actor."

It's possible that Cox could just be keeping a large secret by pretending like he's unaware of the rumor but I don't think this tidbit runs that deep. A lot of this has been fan speculation and fan theories do have a tendency to take on a life of their own, especially on the internet. Director Kevin Smith even fueled the rumor himself by joining in on the speculation. This doesn't mean Cox is opposed to joining the MCU, in fact, it seems like he'd return to the character without hesitation if asked:

"Look, I had a great time. I'm so grateful I got to play that character as long as I did. Of course, I'd love to keep going. I'd love to be involved with it."

I, like many fans, still feel the sting of Netflix canceling the Daredevil series, along with their entire Marvel lineup. All of the shows had a popular run but one of the big complaints was that the television shows couldn't crossover into the films because they were under a deal with Netflix. I suppose the one positive thing is that there is a possibility that the films could use the Netflix characters in the future now that they're all freed up and Cox is on board with that idea:

"As a fan of the Marvel movies, I've loved the little stuff where they pop up here and there but because we were on Netflix, we weren't able to do as much for legal reasons, I don't know why," Cox concludes. "But I love the idea of Jessica and Matt showing up in the background or Matt as a lawyer advising Peter Parker. That'd be really, really cool."

So, at the moment, this appears to be a rumor that was spread more by the fans but who knows what could happen moving forward. Shooting on the next SPIDER-MAN sequel has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has resulted in its release date getting pushed as well. Perhaps with more time to develop the idea, this fan theory can become a reality but for now, it just remains speculation.
