Alita: Battle Angel, sequel, Christoph Waltz

James Cameron had been developing ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL for decades, but the lengthy development of AVATAR led to the project being pushed back again and again. Cameron finally chose to focus on the AVATAR sequels and handed the project off to Robert Rodriguez, while still remaining onboard as producer and co-writer. The film focuses on Alita (Rosa Salazar), a cyborg who awakens with no memory and is taken in by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), who recognizes the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past.

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL contained several characters and plot-points which would have been paid off in the sequel, but the film's lackluster box-office seemed to have put a nail in that particular coffin. That said, the film's cast and crew have voiced their support for a follow-up, including Christoph Waltz, who was asked by Collider whether or not he'd be interested in returning for another ALITA film.

Of course! Of course I would! But, you know, I’m as wise as you are. I haven’t heard anything and I’m a little disappointed and surprised that I haven’t heard a thing so far, because I know that it has followers. I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result. You know, it was Fox and Fox doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s Disney. Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue. I have no clue. Maybe they’re working on something and I wouldn’t be the first person to hear, but meanwhile, I haven’t heard anything.

Waltz isn't the only member of the ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL cast game to return, as Rosa Salazar said last July that she "would play Alita ‘til my last breath, and thanks to the performance capture technology, I probably could." Should the stars align, would you be interested in a sequel to ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL or did the film fail to catch your interest?

The official synopsis for ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL:

When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

While we may not have a sequel to ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL to look forward to, you can make the film your own on Digital/DVD/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD right now.
