The Incredibles 2, Cars 3 in development but Pirates 5 may not happen

How do you like your good movie news? With a side of more good news? I can accomodate that. Fans of Brad Bird‘s animated career should rejoice from yesterday’s news that both RATATOUILLE and THE INCREDIBLES are getting the 3D treatment, it looks like the studio has decided to move forward with THE INCREDIBLES 2. Bird is currently filming Disney’s mysterious TOMORROWLAND and has said he would come back for a sequel to his superhero classic if the story was right. There is no word as to whether he will produce, consult, script, or even direct, but I would say the likelihood is high.

This comes along with the less stellar news that CARS 3 is coming as well. The Pixar series about anthropomorphic automobiles has been a marketing behemoth for the studio but has been also the most creatively weak films Pixar has made. I did like CARS 2 a hell of a lot more than the first movie, but I am not holding my breath.

But, on the flipside of these greenlights comes word that another cash cow for Disney, the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series, may not be a sure thing any longer. Variety‘s Marc Graser tweeted this today.

With directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg attached to helm PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, it seemed like the Johnny Depp film was coming no matter what, but then the film was pushed to 2016, effectively stopping casting and pre-production until decisions could be made. While the films have made a ton of money, the fan reaction seemed to land more in the “who cares” category rather than rapt anticipation.

None of these films currently have release dates, but with the time table on animated films pretty lengthy, I wouldn’t expect to see CARS 3 or THE INCREDIBLES 2 for several year. We should find out sometime this year if PIRATES 5 is happening or not.
