Edward Zwick’s The Great Wall postpones production and picks up a supernatural synopsis

Edward Zwick just loves to make movies about white guys (and the occasional girl) saving the day – not that they’re bad movies or anything (I especially enjoy GLORY, THE LAST SAMURAI, and BLOOD DIAMOND), there’s just a pretty consistent theme that can be observed running through all of his work. And THE GREAT WALL looks to be no different, with Henry Cavill (MAN OF STEEL) and Benjamin Walker (ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER) playing two men amongst a group of “British warriors who happen upon the hurried construction of the massive wall. As night falls, the warriors realize that the haste in building the wall isn’t just to keep out the Mongols — there is something inhuman and more dangerous.”

Which is a bit unexpected. I thought this was merely going to be about the building of The Great Wall with some Mongol defence thrown in, but nope, it seems there’s going to be something much worse than Mongols plaguing the construction. Which is saying a lot, because what’s worse than an army of angry Mongols? Not much.

Zhang Ziyi is currently being courted to join the project alongside other Chinese actors and actresses. THE GREAT WALL is meant to be the first product of Legendary’s new studio extension, Legendary East, with the delay coming from the fact that shooting will take place in both China and New Zealand and spring weather is simply more permissive. Unless something inhuman starts stalking the movie…
