Update: A rep for Chad Stahelski contacted /Film to clarify that the comments made in the initial article were inaccurate, and he was responding to a hypothetical situation regarding the Wachowskis involvement. They are still not involved with the fourth Matrix movie.

For the last two years news has been fluttering around that a new MATRIX movie is in the works, with few details sprouting up here and there as to what it maybe-could-possibly-perhaps-might be about. One downside for fans has been the report that the original trilogy’s creators/directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski would not be involved in the new movie(s) as it appeared Warner Bros. would be going another way. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, as JOHN WICK 3 director Chad Stahelski claims the duo are indeed involved in the project.

The director, who worked as a stunt double on the previous movies, was speaking with Yahoo Movies UK where he’s said that not only is he excited about the Wachowskis being involved, but also how much they will be expanding THE MATRIX universe.

“I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved. And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

When asked if the Wachowskis would be directing, Stahelski said he wasn’t sure if they or just Lana would be, but still confirmed that the two are involved in the new movie. “And if they wanted help, I would absolutely put down whatever I was doing to help them,” he said.

The news first broke in 2017 that a new entry in the series was coming from WB, but that Wachowskis wouldn’t be involved. Since then more bit and pieces have surfaced, including from writer Zak Penn, who said the movie was neither a “reboot” or “remake” and reports circulating the story could center on Morpheus.

One of the big factors for a new MATRIX would be Keanu Reeves, who played Neo a.k.a The One in the three movies. In the past, he seemed open-minded about returning, but under the condition that the Wachowskis write and direct, saying, “People die, stories don’t, people in stories don’t.”

Stahelski has always had a close working relationship with the Wachowskis, and so it stands to reason he knows more about what their future projects are than some others. Still, it's worth noting none of this is confirmation of their involvement until a formal announcement. As studios look to make sequels to older series it stands to reason that WB would have the Wachowskis involved with the new movie, but if they're not directing, then who? If Stahelski really wants to help, maybe he can jump behind the camera.
