Matthew McConaughey to get stoned for Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum

Well, alright alright alright. It looks as if Oscar award winning actor Matthew McConaughey will need to brush up on his pinch and roll skills, once again, as he prepares to spark one up for SPRING BREAKERS director Harmony Korine’s THE BEACH BUM. In the film, McConaughey will star as a character named Moondog, a rebellious and lovable rogue who grabs life by the balls and lives it to the fullest.

Set to produce the film, which is scheduled to begin shooting its principal photography this coming July, is Le Grisbi Productions’ John Lesher, Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, and Iconoclast’s Charles-Marie Anthonioz, Mourad Belkeddar and Nicolas Lhermitte.

When elaborating about the film, Korine had this to say about THE BEACH BUM:

The Beach Bum will be a wild, audacious ride, and I can't think of anyone better than Matthew McConaughey to play our hero Moondog, a rebellious charmer in this fast-paced, uplifting and irreverent comedy.

Adding to Korine’s enthusiasm was producer John Lesher, who stated:

In The Beach Bum, Harmony has crafted the perfect movie for our dark and serious time – a refreshingly original, irreverent, and hilarious stoner comedy that only he could create.

What’s that? These two hyper-positive quotes from the film’s creators aren’t quite enough to quench your curiosity and excitement for this upcoming project? Well then, how about these words from Thorsten Schumacher, CEO and founder of Rocket Science Productions:

Exhilarating and outrageous, Matthew McConaughey’s Moondog character is pure charisma – a force of nature and an uncompromising maverick with a lust for life and everything it throws at him.

Geez, with cheerleaders like this you’d think that THE BEACH BUM was poised to be the GODFATHER of stoner comedies. Anyway, it’s cool to see that the film’s creators and financiers are super pumped about this upcoming project. I don't know that I'll be checking this one out, but hey, I dig the positive vibes, man.

What do you all think? Are you up for more of McConaughey’s stoner antics? Will he have refined his approach to playing a toker with a lust for life in the years since moving on from DAZED AND CONFUSED? I would certainly think so. After all, McConaughey is known for being rather transformative when the role calls for it. Just look at what he did with his Detective Rust Cohle character from TRUE DETECTIVE Season One. For my money, that was one of the man’s most impressive roles to date.

Ah, and don't forget, you can check out McConaughey when he stars opposite Idris Elba in the adaptation of Stephen King's THE DARK TOWER, which is set to hit theaters this July 28, 2017.
