Paramount is interested in Attack the Block director Joe Cornish for Star Trek 3

I can't lie: this news has me very excited. Deadline is reporting that Paramount is currently courting ATTACK THE BLOCK director Joe Cornish for STAR TREK 3. The site has learned that the studio is very high on Cornish directing a third film, but no offer has been made yet by Paramount. Deadline also says the studio wants to start filming the new movie by summer of 2014. Empire claims Paramount has previously shown interest in Cornish directing the next STAR TREK film, and although he did turn the job down when it was offered before, the studio still considers Joe Cornish to be their top choice at this time.

Joe Cornish has been attached to several projects since ATTACK THE BLOCK came out in 2011 (including an adaptation of the novel Snow Crash), but this would be the biggest one yet for the director. If it's a gig he's turned down before though, is it something he's even interested in? I, for one, would love to see Joe Cornish direct a new STAR TREK movie. ATTACK THE BLOCK was one of my favorite movies of 2011, and I think Cornish would do an excellent job with STAR TREK. I'm a little surprised he hasn't directed anything since ATTACK THE BLOCK considering how well it was received. But people certainly noticed his work on that film, and I would be very happy with him behind the camera for the next STAR TREK movie.

If STAR TREK 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) starts filming this summer, there's a good chance it'll be released sometime in 2016.
