Poster for Bobcat Goldthwait’s latest dark comedy God Bless America

Who would have thought that Bobcat Goldthwait would be pumping out all these incredible (and dark… so, so dark) comedies? Sure, SHAKES THE CLOWN is an underappreciated cult classic, but it’s only with his latest films that we’ve really understood his genius.

It started with 2006’s SLEEPING DOGS LIE, a oddly sweet film about- no joke- a guy who finds out that his fiancee once blew a dog. Then there was WORLD’S GREATEST DAD with Robin Williams, one of the darkest comedies of all time, about a father who takes advantage of his son’s auto erotic asphysiation to better his writing career.

Like I said- dark.

GOD BLESS AMERICA looks to continue this trend. The official synopsis:

Loveless, jobless and possibly terminally ill, Frank has had enough of the downward spiral of America. With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and decides to off the stupidest, cruelest and most repellent members of society with an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy, who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement.

Joel Murray (THE ARTIST, Fred Rumsen from “Mad Men”) stars as Frank and relative newcomer Tara Lynne Barr plays Roxy.

Magnet Releasing will release GOD BLESS AMERICA on VOD on April 6th and then bring it to theaters on May 11th. Can’t wait.
