Sonic The Hedgehog racing toward a live-action/hybrid movie at Sony

Sonic The Hedgehog is finally being brought up to speed with the other popular comic book properties that have been given a shot at being adapted for big-screen adventure. That’s right… Sonic The Hedgehog is being primed for his very own movie.

Speaking to The Worldfolio, SEGA CEO Hajime Satomi dropped the information bomb that such a project is in the works at Sony Pictures for release in the next couple of years.

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

Hmmm… a live-action/animation hybrid…? Is that really the best approach to take for Sonic… bringing him into a world where humans exist, unless you’re going to go meta and have him realize what a big video game star he is? Otherwise, we’re looking at something that at least will look like those ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS or GARFIELD movies and… I just can’t. It makes me too sad to even envision something like that.

Sonic would be better off within his own world, maybe with Tails introduced early on, and of course battling the evil Dr. Robotnik as is standard in a Sonic adventure. Please don’t turn this into THE SMURFS. No one needs that.
