The CW's Arrow will come to an end with its eighth and final season

The CW's Arrowverse has become quite the small-screen cinematic universe, but it seems that the series which started it all will be coming to an end as it's been announced that Arrow, which premiered in 2012, will be hanging up its hood with its eighth and final season which will consist of ten-episodes. The series went on to spawn other shows in the same universe, including The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow.

In a statement, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Beth Schwartz said:

This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of ‘Arrow’ in mind. We’re heartened by the fact that ‘Arrow’ has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.

Stephen Amell, who stars in Arrow as Oliver Queen, took to Twitter to say, "Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life... but you can’t be a vigilante forever. Arrow will return for a final run of 10 episodes this Fall. There’s so much to say... for now I just want to say thank you." Speculation about Arrow's end began during the recent Elseworlds crossover event, when Oliver Queen made a deal with the Monitor to spare the lives of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Flash (Grant Gustin). It's not known what Oliver offered up in exchange, but that will likely come into play in the next crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths. In an emotional Facebook video, Amell teased that although the show will be ending, it may not be the last we see of him in the Arrowverse. "Something tells me even when I’m done, I won’t be gone. If you’ve watched the Arrowverse, you should understand that," Amell said.
