Nancy Meyers dates her next anticipated comedy starring Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey, & Owen Wilson

Attention, Nancy Meyers fans! Your ship has come in! After two-plus years of negotiations, Nancy Meyers’ next film project is in the works at Warner Bros. The forthcoming comedy features an all-star cast including Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey, and Owen Wilson. In addition to directing the movie, Meyers will also pen the screenplay. According to reports, Meyers’ next film will open on December 25, 2027.

Other Meyers classics

Meyers’ new film is her first since 2015’s The Intern, a workplace drama starring Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, and Rene Russo, among others. In the movie, a 70-year-old widower, Ben Whittaker (De Niro), has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway). Other stand-outs from Meyers include The Parent Trap, Something’s Got to Give, The Holiday, It’s Complicated, Private Benjamin, Father of the Bride, and more.

Wasn’t Meyers’ new project going to Netflix?

Before Meyers’ new project landed at Warner Bros., it found a home at Netflix. However, the streamer shut it down due to budget concerns. According to reports, Meyers wanted $150 million, but Netflix would only agree to $130 million. During that time, the movie was titled Paris Paramount, with Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender, and Scarlett Johansson expected to star. To note, Paris Paramount is not the comedy’s official title.

When Meyers pitched the film to Netflix, the story revolved around a young writer-director who falls in love with a producer. The pair made several successful films before breaking up, both romantically and professionally. They are forced back together when a new, great project arises, and they find themselves dealing with high stakes and volatile stars. It was semi-autobiographical, according to a write-up by The Hollywood Reporter.

Fond memories of Father of the Bride

While I’m unfamiliar with much of Meyers’ directorial efforts, her written work on 1991’s Father of the Bride is one of my favorite romantic comedies of the early ’90s. The film features brilliant and touching performances from Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, and Martin Short, with Kieran Culkin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, George Newbern, and BD Wong rounding out the cast.

Are you a Nancy Meyers fan? Will her next film end up on Netflix if the WB/Netflix merger goes through before its release? We shall see!
